Discover the Signs and Symptoms of Melasma

There are several disorders and diseases of the skin that cause it to turn color. This will most often occur on spotty areas of the body and primarily on the face. Examples of these kinds of skin conditions include eczema, rosacea, lupus and melasma. Melasma is characterized by dark patches on the face and sometimes on the chest, neck or arms. People with darker skin tones and women seem to have the condition the most, but excessive sunlight exposure seems to cause it as well.

Causes and Symptoms

Chloasma is a name that’s given to melasma when it concerns pregnant women. This is also known as the “mask of pregnancy”. It seems to occur primarily because of the hormone fluctuations that happen when a woman is pregnant. Changes in a woman’s body chemistry also easily lead to visible signs of it, such as acne and rashes and hives.

People with dark skin are much more at risk for getting melasma than people with fair skin. Female hormones, especially progesterone and estrogen, seem to be associated with this skin condition. Too much exposure to direct sunlight on the skin seems to interact with many women’s skin chemistry, causing these dark patches on the skin. It’s not certain what directly causes melasma, but these are general characteristics of people who tend to get it.

Thankfully, melasma is nothing more than an aesthetic nuisance, when it comes down to it. There are significantly no other uncomfortable physical symptoms other than the self-consciousness you might feel if you have it. This kind of social awkwardness plagues most people with the condition.

How Melasma is Treated

Some people, mostly women, are lucky enough to see the dark patches on their skin disappear on their own in time. There is no timeline set in stone, but sudden hormonal changes that can sometimes occur in women can lead to the reduction of these dark patches. However, cases of it leaving on its own are moderately rare.
